Nice wooden lidded box with a beautiful enamel with a Geisha processed in the lid.
The box is a nice example of the Japanoise style, a style from France
that was inspired by Japanese art, at the end of the 19th century. Art
Nouveau originated from this style.
The box is nicely carved from
blackened wood and is in good condition. In the lid is an enamel that
was probably made in Limoges, France, the town of enamel craftsmanship.
The enamel is signed with H.M.
The email shows a scene with a Geisha making music, she plays the Shamisen, a Japanese lute. She is
viewed from behind, she is slightly turned towards the viewer. The whole
scene is situated in Japan, so there is also a folding screen with
birds in the room.
The colours are so warm and full of colour, it's like a small painting. This email is really a good quality piece.
