Reclining Nude, painted with enamel on copper by the French artist Marc Gimat (1879-1969).
The nude woman, lying on a sheet and a pillow, yet surrounded by nature, exudes a certain sensuality. The way she tilts her head slightly backward is beautifully rendered, and the play of light is exquisite. The painting is loose and free in style. It is a highly expressive and powerful piece that immediately catches the eye when displayed on a wall.
The painting is indistinctly signed at the bottom right, but on the reverse, there is a much more elaborate signature, including details of where it has been exhibited.
The piece has been exhibited multiple times at salons, including in Menton (France) and Newhaven (Sussex) in 1954.
Biography:
Marc Gimat (Fr. 1912-1969) studied in Paris and was a pupil of Lucien Simon and H.R. Moucassin, both of whom influenced his technique and style. Gimat’s art is characterized by warm colors and vibrant compositions. He often depicted floral still lifes, but daily life scenes and nudes were also recurring themes in his work.
He primarily worked with oil paints and drawings, but he also painted with enamel on copper plates, a technique that has existed for centuries. His smaller enamel works are particularly cherished, though his paintings are equally captivating.
He exhibited his works at the Société des Artistes Français and received much acclaim for his unique style and technique.
The frame has some minor imperfections; it is clearly handmade by the artist himself. Of course, it can be replaced. We have decided to leave it as it is and let the buyer decide.
