About this piece

Small and very charming silvered bronze sculpture on a black marble base. A sitting woman with a very large turban and necklace made by the English sculptor Sybille May. She played with forms and lines and stylished the figure in a great way.

The bronze is signed and dated at the skirt with 'Sybille May, 1927'.

Biography:
Sybille May was an English sculptor who lived and worked during the 1920and 1930's in France. Some literature mentioned here as an American artist.

She worked in her own style, influenced by Cubism. She used this cubist elements in her decorative style of the Art Deco. She was a member of Arthur Goldscheiders art movement La Stèle et l'Évolution. Her work was also exhibited at the Exposition Internationale Arts et Décoratifs in 1925 in Arthur Goldscheider's pavilion.

She also made ceramic work besides her bronzes and worked together with her friend and member of La Stèle, de French ceramist Édouard Cazaux (1889-1974). This particular bronze is also made on top of a ceramic lidded box for Goldscheider, Paris.

Besides Goldscheider she had a contract with editor and art dealer Albert Buisson. Sybille May also worked with the sculptor Pierre le Faguays.

Her date of birth is unknown, Sybille May died in 1935 in Paris.

Condition

The silver patina is a bit worn, on the turban are a few little flakes. See also the photo's.
