About this piece

Beautiful bas-relief by the French artist, glass specialist and restorer Michel Détré. It is a modern work from the beginning of this century. The romantic atmosphere, the high quality and the technique used are very similar to the work of René Lalique. That's no coincidence. The French artist Michel Détré, originally a painter, illustrator and cartoonist, was also France's leading restorer of glass from the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods for more than 40 years. Every leading gallery in France came to him with their glassware.

After he stopped doing that, he started designing glass himself. Basically just for his own pleasure. However, his designs are so successful that his work is regularly exhibited at well-known galleries in Paris.

I came across this work by accident and was intrigued, it was a beautiful work and that is why I decided to include this work in our collection, even though the work is at most 12 years old. Normally our limit is 1970-80.

I don't know exactly how old Michel Détré is, but I do know that in 1961 he attended the art academy l'Ecole des Beaux Arts de Bourges, where he was taught by the sculptor Marcel Gili, he was a student a pupil of Maillol. Détré was also trained as a painter. He joined the hyperrealists and worked successfully in this style for several years, in the late 60s, early 70s, but he became restless and decided to start illustrating as well. He also worked as a restorer of paintings, but many artists did that as a way to earn some extra money.

Eventually his interest in glass from the Art Nouveau and Art Deco period made him delve into glass techniques, within a short time he was so successful that he started doing this full-time. After a long time he started painting again and started making glass himself in collaboration with Verrerie de Soisy, a small glass workshop that has been working with various artists since 1978.

The bas relief is extensively signed on the side, "Michel Détré, with monogram 'MD', 'Verrerie de Soisy', and the edition number '10/10'.
