About this piece

This bronze sculpture by the artist J. Valla was made around 1925. The female archer represents Diana, the goddess of the hunt. The special thing about this bronze is that it is made as a kind of two-sided relief, it seems three-dimensional, but it is very thin (1.2 cm). It is beautifully done, it reminds me of the sculptures of the Spanish contemporary artist Jaume Plensa, who uses the same technique for his monumental sculptures.

Unfortunately, almost nothing can be found about J. Valla, only that this artist was active around 1925-1930 and worked in the Art Deco style. We suspect that this work was made in France. It could be that the name Valla is a pseudonym.
The use of a pseudonym was not uncommon at the time.
