About this piece

Beautiful couple of pigeons, created in a naturalistic and in a slightly stylized way, as often happened in the Art Deco period. They were made by the Dutch/French sculptress Claudie Frédérique Korthals in the 1930's.

The sculpture is made of plaster which is patinated with gum lacquer, which give the sculpture a beautiful velvet shine.

The sculpture is 23 cm high and it's signed on the base with 'C.F. Korthals'.

Biography:

Claudie Frédérique Korthals was born in 1913 and is of Dutch descent. On one book she is described as a Dutch sculptor and in the other as a French sculptor. Many times they suppose also she was a male artist. I suspect that she grew up in France anyway because there is a newspaper article about her first exhibition, she was only 13 years old at the time (February 5, 1927, l'Echo Saumurois). The article was highly rated about her talent.

She attends the Art Academy and was a student of Paul Landowski and Édouard Navelier.

Claudie Frédérique Korthals is counted among the 'animaliers' sculptors who specialize in animal sculptures. Her preference was for domestic animals such as cats, dogs, ducks, chickens and also pigeons. She worked with various materials such as plaster, wood, bronze and marble.

She exhibited at various Salons from the 1930s. Manufacture Sèvres has also released several works of her in porcelain in a limited edition.
