Beautiful lidded box by Daum Nancy, it's like a painting of a landscape with a nice cloudy sky.
It's an intriguing and unusual decoration.
The box is octagonal with slightly rounded corners and a pillow-shaped lid. The box stands on a slightly raised foot.
On one side, the box is dark blue at the bottom that changes into dark green to grass green, above that a light blue cloudy sky. The other side has the same colours, but no dark blue. The glass itself has a gradient from clear glass at the bottom to soft pink at the top.
The colours on the box were created by placing a pattern with colour powders on a marble surface, then the box was pressed onto the powders at a temperature of 800 degrees Celsius, after which the powders were fused on the glass with the flame. To create a pattern, parts of the vitrified layer were then removed with acid. This technique is called 'Vitrification des poudres'.
This technique was widely used by Daum Nancy in the period 1900-1914.
The signature 'Daum Nancy' with the Lorraine cross also corresponds to this period.
