About this piece

This young woman, immortalized in bronze by Raimond Sabouraud, is very nice to look at. He portrayed her innocence and her character so well, with her slightly sagging hip and her shy expression her face. Everything shows that it is still an inexperienced young woman.

The sculpture is cast in bronze with the 'cire perdue' (lost wax) method by Claude Valsuani. The bronze has a light brown patina. Valsuani was known for its high quality bronzes, many well-known artists such as Rodin, Degas, Modigliani and Matisse, let casted their work by Valsuani.

Raimond Sabouraud made this sculpture in 1926. It is signed on the base with his monogram 'RJS' and dated '1926', with the mark of Claude Valsuani.; 'Cire Perdue, C. Valsuani' and nr. 'IV'.

Biography:
Raimond Adriën Jacques Sabouraud (France, 1864-1938) was a physician, specialized in dermatology and mycology. During his residenties he visited the Musée des Moulages au Trocadère and saw the "Cariathide de l'Erechtéon". He became so taken by this work, he immediately went looking for clay and began to sculpt. Then it went fast, he had talent and passion and became a painter and sculptor, besides his work as a physician. He made many bronze nudes.

He made his debut as a sculptor in 1889. Raimond Sabouraud was a good friend of painter Odilon Redon, together they supported young artists like Derain, Utrillo, Soutine, 'the poor' Modigliani and Dufresne, as so beautifully described in the book on Sabouraud, written in 1920's.

The writer, Elie Faure, also wrote that he could not understand the "art" that this young artists produced. For me a very funny passage, because the writer emphasizes rather specifically that art can only be good if there is an intellectual basis, as can be clearly seen with Sabouraud, who has a scientific university background. The book gives a good era of the 20's and if he could know...

Raimond Sabouraud exhibited regularly at the Salon d'Automn and the Salon des Tuileries, together with artists like Raoul Dufy, Alberto Giacometti, Georges Roualt and Marc Chagall.
