Beautiful dancer, made of white terracotta with a thin white frosted glaze. She is moulded.
Her cloths tells me she is a so called Tanagra dancer. She is wearing a veil and stands in a dancing pose.
Tanagra dancers became in France, at the second part of the 19th century, a very loved theme amongst artists, they all gave them there own artistic interpretation and style.
At an archaeological site in Tanagra, Greece, mid 19th century, they found a lot of little terracotta statues of female dancers. They all wearing a veil. They dated from the 4th century BC and were used for ceremonial purposes. The Louvre museum exhibited several examples and they became well known and loved.
This example is very nicely styled and less classical, the expression is so beautiful. I assume it's made during the 1920's.
The sculpture is signed but is very badly readable.
Good, the sculpture has no chips or cracks, just a few little stains by age and use.
